Among factors the trust must consider when choosing an art work are:
- The time frame that an art work will be exhibited – whether temporary or permanent.
- The art work must be by an artist who is considered to be credible, whether local, national, or international.
- The Trust will be guided by experts in the field when choosing new art works.
- Art works may be in any medium deemed suitable by the Trust.
Strategy
- The Trust aims to procure at least one major art work every two years. Its ability to deliver will be influenced by various factors, including the scale of the work, availability of funds, and ongoing support from Council.
- Every three years the Trust will procure at least one work by a Taranaki artist, or by an artist with strong affiliations to the region.
- In line with Council’s strategy the Trust will work with the Len Lye Foundation to recognise opportunities for commissioning more Len Lye works for public places.
- The Trust’s preference is to commission works from artists rather than purchase existing works. This will maximise its ability to ensure works are appropriate for a particular site and the public experience that is sought. However, while commissioning is a strong preference, it is not an overriding policy and may not always apply.
- The Trust is happy to receive submissions from artists interested in providing works for its programme. Please address submissions in writing to Terry Parkes, Chairman, NP District Art in Public Places Trust, C/O info@nicehotel.co.nz or 71 Brougham Street, New Plymouth. These will be considered at the Trust’s monthly meetings, and a response given to the artist thereafter. If the Trust is interested in taking a submission further it would then invite the artist to meet with the committee.
- In identifying sites for public art works the Trust will consider, among other factors, whether the spaces are significant to New Plymouth District, and are frequented by the local community as well as visitors to the area.
Funding and Support
The New Plymouth District Council has provided the Trust with an initial grant and ongoing
funding as approved in its annual budget.
However, the Trust is committed to fundraising where possible to contribute to the cost of art works.Support from the community – businesses, individuals and groups – will be a key to ensuring the
future success of providing art in public places. Such support may be provided in a variety of ways
such as donations, sponsorship, bequests, and donation to works. The Trust is happy to consider
suggestions and, as a registered charitable trust, is able to offer tax incentives.
